Focus on every layer

A good user experience is more than functionality, it is the combination of a great user interface and a very focused set of features. Focus does not limit the number of functions, it limits the scope. Developers therefore needs to define core functionality to avoid implementing nonessential (and often inferior) solutions to overlapping problems already solved by other applications.

What obviously complicates the matter is workflow. Sometimes switching to another application is simply not optimal. For this reason some applications include features that initially could seem superfluous. These applications are either initially well-designed or the result of a more organic approach causing the application to mature over time. In both cases a designer plays a key role in guiding development.

Seymour Papert once wrote that a system will always be more powerful if it is easier to use. Ease of use is the result of a consistent focus and good guidance throughout development, coupled with an interface that clearly communicates this focus to the user. Identifying the optimal way to do this is something I absolutely love doing and always try to accomplish. According to feedback I provide good guidance, useful insight and suggestions. I am also capable of creating the visuals needed to support or illustrate my ideas.
